Stories from Smoky Mountain Settlers

"I was born about a mile and a half or two miles below Gatlinburg. That's what is known as Huskey's Grove Branch now. That's where I go to church at, Huskey's Grove, but I was raised in and around Gatlinburg. I used to live in the Sugarlands before the park service ever was started." Reaford McCarter

Ghost Stories from the Smoky Mountains
" I heard my father tell about the time that he was a young man doing his courtin'. He would travel down what they call Sugarland Branch now, and there was a place where you cross a little creek. Everybody was scared of that place because . . ."

Personal Accounts
Mt. LeConte - Sometimes it's just hard to get organized, as when the Chattanooga Snow Assault Team (CSAT) made its second winter pilgrimage to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Only three members from the team's 1993 ill-fated attempt on Clingman's Dome, which ended in a slush wading retreat under freezing rain, were able to return to the mountains on Saturday, January 13, 1996.

Storytellers

Charles "Cuz" Headrick - Cuz is an authentic, energetic Smoky Mountain Storyteller. Discovering the talent within himself, he became a Professional Storyteller in 1986. He tells traditional tales, Jack Tales, Appalachian Tales, Oral History, tall tales, original and humorous stories. His CD's, Appalachian Tales and Music and the Country Tones have brought joy to many after their visits to the Smoky Mountains. Cuz is probably the most visible, well-known storyteller from Tennessee. Cuz shares tales of his culture with the thousands who visit the Smokies. Featured at Ober Gatlinburg for the last five years, he plays mountain music, bluegrass and gospel with the Country Tones. Cuz is on the mountain from May to November. They have several hundred people daily who take home a chunk of his Appalachian Tales and Music.

Janice Brooks-Headrick - Under the guise of a normal woman lurks the personality of a Gypsy. Born in the Endless Mountains of New York State, Jan traveled across America, seeking truth, justice and the American way. She fell madly, crazily in love with a longlegged, guitar pickin', storytellin', Tennessean, Cuz Headrick. Jan is happy to share her education in life's experiences with you.
