Horseback Riding Stable Extends Service through December in
Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has announced that one of its horseback concessions, Smoky Mountain Stables, has extended its operating period to remain open through December 31, 2007, weather permitting. One-hour guided horseback rides will be offered to visitors 7 days a week, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The fee is $20 per hour per person.

Park Superintendent Dale Ditmanson said that "The Smoky Mountain Stables operator, Kenny Kear, offered to keep the horseback riding stable open during the month of December which can have suitable weather for horseback riding. Unseasonably warm weather has occurred in past years and if this December follows that trend, providing this service will offer an added recreational opportunity for visitors to the Park. Horseback riding in winter can give visitors a different experience when the deciduous trees are clear of leaves, allowing better views of scenery."

Because weather in December can be questionable, the stable may close during periods when weather is unsuitable for riding. It is recommended that visitors call the stable in advance at 865-436-5634 to determine whether the stable is open or closed.

The Smoky Mountain Stables is located off U.S. Highway 321, on the west side of Gatlinburg, and is the only horse concession in the Park that is open.
