Great Smoky Mountains National Park Announces
Cosby Mountain Music Summer Series

great smoky mountains national park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has announced a series of “old-time” mountain music presentations at the Cosby Campground amphitheater on Saturday evenings this summer. The series, entitled Cosby Mountain Music, is free to the public and will involve performances on June 23, July 28, and August 11. The performances begin at 7:00 p.m. and last an hour and a half.

The first program in the series on June 23 will feature the fine talents of “Boogertown Gap Band.” This band, consisting of Keith Watson and Ruth Barber, plays traditional songs and tunes, utilizing the fiddle, claw-hammer banjo, and guitar. Along with their playing, the band members will provide information on the origins of the songs and tunes of southern Appalachia.

The other dates in the concert series, July 28 and August 11, will feature the skills of another old-time musical act, “The Lost Mill String Band.” This band, consisting of Joan Paul on claw-hammer banjo and Jerry Paul on acoustic bass, also plays traditional music of the southern mountains. One of the goals of this band is to share their enthusiasm for mountain music through song and story, thereby promoting the cultural heritage of this part of southern Appalachia.

Both bands have produced CDs and regularly perform at many music venues in the region.
